One man and his log

Sunday 18th June Mannheim. Leipzig

My last memories of seeing Korea were dashing from the stadium in Daejon as fireworks lit up the sky and 40,000 Koreans went crazy after they defeated Italy. Arriving in the early hours back in Seoul the whole city was out on the streets celebrating. Moving on four years and a lot of those present then have caught football fever and they are over here in Germany. I didn’t realise the relevance back in 2002 but I now suppose that the country’s name is derived from its passion for choreography.

In Leipzig town centre two troupes entertained the “reds” gathered and encouraged everyone to join in their singing and dancing routines. Before each song the words were clearly recited and the dance moves to be used were demonstrated to all those present so they could join in. Those present to a man (well almost) joined in the festivities.

At the stadium the same organisation was shown as they displayed a banner with a message (sorry it was in Korean) and then for the anthem unfurled the national flag, which they then swayed from side to side. At the other side of the stadium another flag was unfurled and I could swear it was swaying in time with the other flag. Throughout the game the coordinators of this support could be seen giving orders as to what was to happen next and the provided a wall of sound that continued throughout the game, no matter how their team were faring.

The fans appeared to be an inspiration to their side who grew stronger as the game wore on, and rewarded their enthusiasm with a late equaliser. Definitely the best supporters of the tournament.

The FIFA stadium announcer was delighted to announce once again that the World Cup Stadium was “Sold Out”. This announcement was greeted with ironic cheers as seats were clearly visible around the Saudi fans. Despite the fact that Emirates Airlines gave free tickets to passengers and the Saudi Embassy gave tickets to people who applied for visas. The situation was similar at other games I have attended most notably Italy v Ghana and last night at France v Korea.

The Germans take great pride in announcing games as “ausverkauft” and in the press they state this along with the attendance for their Bundesliga games. FIFA seem determined to announce that this World Cup is a resounding success and will point to the highest ever % attendance to back up their point. (Surely the Costa Rica v Poland game will not be fully attended as it clashes with the Germany v Ecuador game and a lot of Poles have already gone home.)

But the damage has been done. Allocating more tickets to sponsors than the competing teams has alienated the real fans and the atmosphere is Pkv Pokersuffering. The difficulty supporters have encountered in obtaining tickets has left a bad taste when they see the empty seats.

Regularly after the half time interval vast banks of seats can be seen empty as those in corporate hospitality do their best to get value for money as they gorge themselves on freebies. How long is it before FIFA announce that the half time break will be extended to allow hospitality guests to get through 3 courses before the second half can resume?

The news that 1,700 tickets were not returned by sponsors for one game resulted in a message to be sent out asking for all sponsors to ensure that any unused tickets they have are returned in order that they can be resold.

As a result of this I am aware that at the Togo v Switzerland game an employee of a German sports shoes company sold 25 tickets outside the stadium at face value. Actions like this are too little and too late.

Moor Shocks on the Turf

Last but not least on Saturday, Moor football in Burnley as Manchester City are visiting. The home win is very tempting at 4/1 and Burnley fans will be piling in. City are horrendous value at 7/10. The result of this one will depend on which Manchester will turn up. Like my nan’s gravy, City are not as smooth as they should be. A loss on Saturday could see City 5 points off the sacred Champion’s league positions come Saturday evening. A win for Burnley play bazaar could bring them level on points with safety and “I’ve got a feeling (wooooohoooooo!!!)” that Saturday night will be a good night in Burnley as the 4/1 shot romps home. City will be crocked and shocked: Europa league for the Blues?

The Wicked Witch of West Ham

On Sunday, the not-so-happy Hammers travel up to Merseyside to face the Toffeemen. It has been a very sticky time for Zola of late and events at Upton Park are backing up the assertion that not all world-class players can become successful managers – Alan Shearer can vouch for that. Zola was a wizard on the pitch but is fast becoming the wicked witch of Wham. Many managers are waiting in the wings, claiming “I’m your man” to takeover the Claret-reins. Whoever it may be might just be a step closer on Saturday as Moyes’ men inflict more misery on the Witches of East Ham. (2/5 the Toffees)

Super Sunday

Fulham Fairies flourish

The Wiganers are cottaging on Sunday, Craven thereof. Wigan are thirty goals worse-off than their London counterparts and this will show as Bobby Z and co go to town on their Northern rivals. It’s not often Northerners lose out to Southern fairies, alas this will be one of those days. Big win for Fulham. Get on at Evens.

Agnew & Balague speak to Qq PokerSoccerphile

Following Spain’s dramatic penalty victory over Italy yesterday, Soccerphile spoke to two of Europe’s most respected football writers, respective experts on the countries in the Vienna quarter-final clash.

GUILLEM BALAGUE is a familiar face in the UK media. London correspondent for Spanish football daily AS and Sky Sports’ regular Spanish football expert, Balague has written for a variety of publications and pens a weekly Indiansatta football column in London’s Metro. His own footballing thoughts can be ofound at http://www.guillembalague.com/.

What was your immediate reaction to Fabregas’ penalty?

It was like a final to us. We have always stumbled in the quarter-finals so we were trying to beat our history as well as Italy, and we beat them both.

We played wonderful football as well. The key was to be patient, pass the ball and control Luca Toni. Marchena and Puyol did reall well and everything worked fine against a very mediocre side to be honest. Italy were very disappointing.

They seemed to miss Pirlo badly

I thought Italy’s attitude was wrong from the beginning. Their tempo was too slow and they just pumped balls to Toni, very disappointing from a side which has better players than what they showed.

Spain must be overflowing with confidence now

It feels like a new tournament has just started because we were talking about reaching the quarter finals before it started.

So is all Spain on fire now?

Even in Barcelona! (Guillem’s home town)

Has the perennial jinx on Spain now at last been lifted?

There is something called winning culture which I believe in. If we weren’t winning it was because we didn’t have it. It’s more than anything to do with nationality. On nights like this it gets created so it is a historical night for us.

Next up are the Russians again

But we know how to play them. We can play them. They are fantastic and it will be much better to watch than the first game.

* * *

PADDY AGNEW is World Soccer magazine’s Italian football expert, Rome correspondent for the Irish Times and author of the book “Forza Italia”, a journey into Italy’s football culture.

Did Italy deserve to lose?

It was the worst game I have seen in the tournament so far, and you could argue that neither team deserved to advance. Spain tried to create more but Italy gave a very solid defensive performance.

Italy did not do a lot going forward. At times the game was so hidebound technically it was about as interesting as watching two shy porcupines make love.

Could Italy have approached it with a different mentality then?

I don’t think they could have done a lot more because they were missing Pirlo, their creative midfielder and because they came to this tournament with two possibilities of scoring goals, via the midfield of Pirlo, De Rossi and Camoranesi and via Luca Toni in attack.

But Toni did not look the player he was and since he had a bad tournament, Italy were a blunt instrument up front. Since they did not have Pirlo, the whole responsibility for creating chances was on the shoulders of De Rossi and I don’t think he did much with it.

Casillas certainly did not have a lot of work to do.

So was the squad lacking depth, or could the coach have done things differently?

The squad, minus Cannavaro, was the one which won the World Cup. I don’t think you can argue there was a player who did not play who should have played.

He tried all the options available to him. But if Luca Toni was off form there were not too many alternatives, no plan B. Donadoni has based their game more around one man than Lippi ever did. They were very cagey. It almost looked as if they were playing for penalties.

And Spain?

Spain were not a lot better. It was not a great game at all. They had more options, but it will be an interesting game against Russia. It won’t be as negative because Russia will not be as tightly organised as Italy and they have a lot more firepower going forward. They could really embarass Spain.

What now for Donadoni?

You would need about three psychologists to work out what it was he was saying in his press conference. He does not know what he wants to do and my reading is that the FIGC does not know whether they want to sack him or confirm him.

Messi shows off his latest hat-trick in Togel Madrid

Lionel Messi once again showed off his credentials as the most exciting talent on the world stage with a superb hat-trick for Barcelona in a 3-1 win on Tuesday night.

The diminutive Argentine terrorised the Atletico Madrid defence all night before receiving a standing ovation from the Vicente Calderon satta king chart when he was replaced 10 minutes before full-time.

The result leaves Barcelona well placed to reach the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey when the teams meet again at the Camp Nou next Wednesday.

The 21-year-old sensation set about his task early in the match with great combination play with Daniel Alves, another of the few Barca regulars to feature in a ‘weakened’ first eleven.

With 11 minutes on the clock Alves fed Messi with a well worked one-two which left the striker clean through on Gregory Coupet’s goal. A cool finish into the near post gave Barcelona an early lead.

The teams continued sparring for the remainder of the first half with Maniche going close for Atletico and Seydou Keita wasteful in front of goal for the visitors.

Messi had to wait until the second half for his next decisive moment of the match.

The Rojiblancos had been reverting to dirty tactics in an attempt to stop the Barca man throughout the game. No surprises then when Messi drew a foul in the penalty area five minutes into the second half.

Again great link-up play between Alves and Messi saw the Brazilian full-back slip a ball into the box for his team-mate. Before Messi had a chance to convert the centre he was pulled down by Dutchman Johnny Heitinga.

Referee Gonzalez had no hesitation in pointing to the spot and sending Heitinga off for an early bath. Meanwhile Messi dusted himself off and slotted home the penalty, sending Coupet the wrong way in the process.

The Vicente Calderon crowd made their feelings clear to the home side with jeers and whistles. This proved a much needed spur to the hosts as they mustered a reply shortly after Barca had taken a 2-0 lead.

Substitute Ujfalusi found room to meet Simao’s corner and nodded it behind Pinto to reduce los Colchoneros’ deficit to a single goal once again.

Messi seemed to take this strike personally and promptly got the ball at the other end, skinned two defenders and thumped the ball past Coupet once more. This time he was denied by the crossbar.

Moments later the mercurial talent received the ball in the box with the game entering the final 10 minutes. Instant control allowed him to dribble around the keeper and poke the ball in the empty net and claim the match ball

Atletico fans were able to put the disappointment of their own team’s showing aside for a second and give La Pulga an enthusiastic ovation when he was subbed shortly after completing his hat-trick.

This sentiment for a phenomenal exhibition of skill was shared by the on looking Argentina national coach, Diego Maradona.

The 3-1 win gives Barcelona their 21st victory in 26 games in all competitions for the season. The Catalan’s are 11 points clear in La Liga and bookie’s favourites to win the Champions League again.

However, coach Pep Guardiola’s was quick to play down his role in Barcelona’s impressive start to the season.

“I was merely chosen to train these players. They are the ones who make the coaching staff look good and they are the ones who make this club great.” The 37-year-old said after the game and added, “My job is to ensure they never lower their standards and that they always have the same winning spirit. I’m just lucky to be able to lead this team.”

The coach also seems keen that the people around him should remain in this same level headed mode. When asked what he had said to Messi after such a dazzling performance he said, “I just shook his hand, just like I would with any player.”

The celestial Albiceleste himself seemed chuffed with the display and reaction of the fans when he was taken off.

“It was a very special moment for me to be given a standing ovation. It’s something unexplainable and a beautiful experience for any player.” The pint-sized marvel said.

Portugal Progress Without Persian Pkv Indian Matka

It was something of a wrench to leave Frankfurt, a cosmopolitan city that had really thrown itself into hosting the World Cup. It is not only the main entry point by air for visitors to Germany, its location makes it a convenient staging point for many other venues – leading to a real sense of being in the middle of the world’s greatest tournament.

After spending time in the rather isolated host city of Leipzig and the even more isolated non-World Cup venue of Dresden, it felt good to be coming back to Frankfurt for a flying visit, one that featured not only the Portugal – Iran fixture but also a Indian Matka welcome recharge of those World Cup batteries.

Unfortunately, there was little time to head to Frankfurt’s ‘Fan Fest’, a gallery of riverside seats looking out onto a giant screen in the middle of the Main. Nearby were lots of amusements and stalls to keep Frankfurt families and football fans alike well-entertained and well-refreshed.

Not being able to head to the river or any of the seemingly thousands of friendly bars and pubs that had big-screen televisions, friendly atmospheres and great beer wasn’t too much of a hardship as my route from the main station led in the opposite direction – the WaldStadion – as did those of thousands of fans from around the world.

The Iranians on the concourse and platforms could be heard first and then seen but only as a jumble of flags and a mass of white-shirted bodies jumping up and down. Their opposite numbers were there in similar numbers but with the difference in volume being that of sound.

As I had only decided to come to the game at the last minute, I was on the waiting list for a press ticket. That wasn’t going to be a big problem after checking FIFA’s official media website and learning that only two other people were in a similar position. With an average of over 500 press seats per venue, there was always a number of no-shows, leading to tickets to be redistributed an hour before kick-off.

Not showing up is not a problem for the world governing body as long as the tickets are cancelled before hand so people can be upgraded from the waiting list. Not showing up and not letting FIFA know is a big no-no and the fact that over 250 people had, probably wisely as it turned out, in England’s opening game with Paraguay led to every media organisation receiving e-mails that warned of future repercussions for repeated offences.

Possible withdrawal of accreditation privileges wasn’t on the minds of Iranian fans that were in massing outside the stadium, they were more concerned about their beloved national team crashing out of the tournament after only 180 minutes of play.

Portugal’s laboured victory over Angola in the opening game may not have impressed the watching world but it did earn a valuable three points in a group that may not have had any death-like connotations but was not straightforward with teams from widely differing geographic locations.

That win and Iran’s 3-1 defeat at the hands of Mexico six days earlier in Leipzig meant that the situation was fairly simple. A Portugal win sent the European team into the second round and Team Melli out.

Portugal were on top from the outset and remained that way for the majority of the ninety minutes. Christiano Ronaldo was at Indian satta times wasteful (failed tricks that had the nearby Jorge Baptista throwing his arms up in frustration) but his direct running, shooting and crossing caused problems for a slow Iranian defence and Deco was impressive in midfield.

Iran seemed reluctant to move the ball forward quickly, preferring to walk the ball from one end of the pitch to another and it was little surprise that they rarely troubled the Portuguese defence and goalkeeper.

Still, Branko Ivankovic’s team defended well for most of the game with the under-fire Ebrahim Mirzapoor making some good saves but it was a touch of class from Deco in the second half with a smart shot from outside the area that did the damage.

Iran really should have been back on level terms but substitute Rasoul Khatibi held on to the ball too long in a one-on-one situation and dragged his shot just wide and soon the Iranians were two down and heading home.
